The exercise lasted for two months, August through September 2017, with a two weeks leave towards the end to enable the participants refresh to return back to school. This year’s exercise was very significant in the sense that the participants experienced firsthand an industrial action. Despite the strike action, the participants derived good working experiences. Please see below some comments from some of the students who participated in the exercise.
Finally, the 2017 vacation job exercise came to an end on Thursday 14th September, 2017 with closing ceremonies organized both in UNN and UNEC. At the closing ceremony in UNEC, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Enugu Campus was at hand to represent the Vice Chancellor while Professor Charles Igwe, Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, represented the Vice Chancellor in Nsukka. The ceremony show-cased brilliant presentations by the students who were divided into four different groups with each group given a topic to work on.  The topics covered were:
i. Topic 1:  Starting a Small Scale Agro Business Enterprise
ii. Topic 2:  Starting a Small Scale ICT Business Enterprise
iii. Topic 3:  Starting a Small Scale ICT Business Enterprise
iv. Topic 4:  Rebranding Nigeria’s Image in the International Community.
Also there was a presentation on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by Mr. Bright Ugochukwu Mgbemele. His presentation enlightened everyone on the need to care for our environment. There was a moment of light refreshment for the participants and a short drama to add colour to the event. The day ended with the presentation of certificate of participation to all the students involved.

“Vacation Job has been a great opportunity for young people, preparing them for life after school.  Though new, it has been of great benefit not just to a few, both career-wise and financially. This years’ vacation job has trained its candidates’ in character and work-related issues.  The training spans through practical issues like punctuality, respect, communication skills, networking, PowerPoint Presentation and Work Ethics.  Even though the strike brought its challenges, the 2017 vacation job has been an amazing one and we remain grateful to the University.  We recommend that other institutions adopt this to produce tested and trusted candidates for the job market”.

“Having personally passed through the rigours and formalities and now a beneficiary of the UNN Vacation Job Programme, I sincerely deem it worthwhile.  It is indeed a treasure trove, and a noble academic voyage strictly meant to form, inform and transform and to serve as a preparatory ground for young minds to properly catch a glimpse of the vicissitude of being an employee”.
